Delegation of 3 from Ewha Womans University, South Korea Visits Yamaguchi University

Yamaguchi University (YU) hosted Prof. Ihn-Hwi Park, Vice President for International Affairs, Prof. Changhyun Yoo, Assistant Professor of the Department of Atmospheric Science and Engineering, and Prof. Sang-ho Ro, Assistant Professor, Department of Korean Studies, Scranton College from Ewha Womans University, South Korea from Monday, February 27 to Wednesday, March 1.

Yamaguchi University and Ewha Womans University concluded a university-wide academic exchange agreement in March 2010, and since then have engaged in active exchange of researchers. On top of that, in October 2013, in order to reinforce research cooperation with Ewha Womans University, we designated the university as one of the priority universities for cooperation and have focused on joint research between the two universities. The delegation visiting this time discussed various topics regarding promoting exchange in the field of science and increasing the amount of student exchange.

The delegation began by visiting Dean Shinji from the Faculty of Engineering. There, the discussion touched on SPIED, one of YU’s global efforts, and the Ewha Womans University’s newly-established faculty focused on engineering. Both universities are looking for mutual student exchange in the field of science. The next day, the discussion regarding engineering was continued with Vice President (International Cooperation) Miura and Associate Prof. Imaoka from the Media and Information Technology Center. They introduced the joint research with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Yamaguchi Prefecture for disaster prevention using remote sensing data. The delegation seemed deeply interested in the results of the research using the data.

After the discussions in Tokiwa campus, the delegation moved to Yoshida campus where they met with the Faculty of Global and Science Studies. During the meeting, they spoke with Prof. Loehr and several other teachers from the faculty, discussing student exchange between the Faculty of Global and Science Studies and the similar faculty in Ewha Womans University called Scranton College. Currently 2 students from YU are studying at Ewha Womans University as exchange students and Prof. Loehr explained that they were very satisfied with the educational environment offered by Ewha Womans University. After the meeting, the delegation paid a visit to the Dean Uemura from the Graduate School of East Asian Studies and listened to a brief introduction of the school. Afterwards, they toured the Institute of East Asian Economic Affairs and the Commercial Goods Museum.

Lastly, the delegation made a courtesy visit to President Oka. They expressed their gratitude for the invitation to YU and their hopes to promote the research using the data from JAXA satellite by cooperating with the Center for Research and Application of Satellite Remote Sensing and student exchange with the Faculty of Global and Science Studies and Graduate School of East Asian Studies.

Hopefully this visit will be a new opportunity to deepen cooperation and further develop exchange with Ewha Womans University.
